Cane Toad
The cane toad (Bufo marinus) is continuing its invasion of northern Australia. In 2001 it reached Kakadu National Park, many years ahead of expectations.
All of the toads in Australia are descended from 102 toads collected in Hawaii in 1935. The Hawaiian toads came originally from Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rican toads from Barbados, and the Barbados toads from Guyana in South America. Toads were taken from country to country to attack sugar cane pests. |
