African Capeweed

In this sheep paddock near Margaret River in Western Australia, African capeweed (Arctotheca calendulacea) has replaced all the grass.

Its spread across southern Australia during the colonial era was described by Reverend Tenison-Woods in 1881: "It grows in knee-deep masses by the wayside, it spreads on the paths that are constantly trodden over, and it is found in ruts and on ridges in the middle of the country roads..."
