working to stop further invasions

support ISC priorities

At the recent Invasive Species Forum, members of some community and environment groups expressed a wish to formally endorse the Invasive Species Council's Key Priorities for Advocacy, which were presented at the Forum.

Such endorsement will lend weight to the ISC's submissions to state and federal governments.

The format of such endorsement is for your organization to determine, but we suggest a letter addressed to the ISC, listing the five Priorities for Advocacy, outlined below.

mission and aims
The mission of ISC is to "substantially reduce the impact of invasive species on Australia's biodiversity".

To achieve this, ISC will need to campaign to promote government and community action to:

button Stop new introductions;

button Eradicate or contain new and emerging invasions; and

button Step-up the attack on established environmental pests, and especially the further spread of these pests.

Implicit in these aims is the condition that nation-wide initiatives must prioritise invasive species and locations according to their potential damage to Australia's biodiversity, and the likely effectiveness of control efforts.

In order to realise these aims, ISC has identified the following priorities for advocacy:

ISC - Priorities for Advocacy
1. Improved national quarantine legislation to prevent the introduction of known or probable invasive species.

2. A permanent national, rapid detection and rapid response task force to eradicate or contain new and emerging invasions.

3. National legislation to stop the spread of invasive species (e.g. a National Invasive Species Act), and new national programs to drive established invasions into retreat (such as a new, government funded "Ground Control Task Force", or substantially expanded national "Weed Buster" program).

Two major pre-conditions for the realisation of these proposals are:

4. Widely supported commitment to a first ever national invasive species budget to establish and achieve binding, measurable targets for invasive species prevention, eradication and control; and

5. A new, high level "Invasive Species Committee" to oversee and co-ordinate new levels of national policy and funding support.
